Your first court date is called a "mention". Almost nothing final happens at a mention — it is mostly an administrative step. But what you do (or do not do) can shape the rest of the case.
Brisbane Magistrates Court is at 363 George Street, Brisbane. Arrive 30 minutes early. There is a security screening point at the entrance. Court lists are displayed on screens — find your name and the courtroom.
Neat and respectful. A button-up shirt and trousers, or a modest dress, is appropriate. Avoid sunglasses, hats and obvious branding.
When your name is called, walk to the bar table. The Magistrate will confirm your name and the charge. You will be asked whether you plead guilty or not guilty. If you are unsure, ask for the matter to be adjourned so you can get legal advice. Magistrates routinely grant short adjournments for this.
No. The single most common mistake at a first appearance is entering a plea before getting advice. If in doubt, ask the Magistrate to adjourn for 4–6 weeks for legal advice.
